Planting strawberries with bare roots. With spring comes one of the most consumed and appreciated fruits. Nothing more pleasant than some fresh and freshly picked strawberries. At the time of picking up our strawberry seedlings in the nursery or specialized store, we may choose the option of having them delivered to us in bunches and with the roots uncovered; It will be cheaper and easier to transport than in pots. These strawberries have been extracted from the substrate with its complete root; They are cleaned and disinfected, the leaves are cut and stored at low temperatures in refrigerators to cause the plants to enter dormancy and to acquire the cold hours necessary to be ready for fruiting. When we receive our bare-rooted plants, if it takes a few days to grow them, we must keep them in a cool place, but protected from the cold. They should get a little light. It will be crucial to keep your roots covered and moist, but not waterlogged. Ideally, plant them as soon as possible. When the time comes, and after removing dry leaves and any symptoms of putrefaction, presence of fungi or mold, and dry or diseased leaves, we proceed with the planting. Before, we will soak the roots of the plants for about 20 minutes. Not the whole plant, we will simply soak the roots; that in this way they rehydrate and break their latency cycle. After 20 minutes, we will cut approximately a third of the length of the roots to help the plant generate new, strong and healthy ones. We will use a substrate rich in organic matter, such as that enriched with worm castings. Our strawberries will grow best in nutrient-dense, fluffy, light, and well-draining soil. We could also plant them in pots. We will spread its roots through the substrate, making sure to keep the crown of the plant - the point where the stems meet the roots - at ground level, without burying. We will gently cover the extended roots with substrate. Strawberries have shallow roots, so you don't need to give them too much depth. We water generously, so that the substrate settles and there are no gaps with air. When we plant them on the ground, the recommended distance is about 12 to 18 inches. between each plant. With a good mulch based on straw, mulch or sawdust, we favor moisture retention, protect the roots from frost, hinder the appearance of unwanted herbs, and also, we will prevent our strawberries from rotting when they come into contact with the substrate. In a few days, our plants will sprout quickly. And in just one week, we will see that new leaves have appeared and are great. Soon, we will be able to enjoy a splendid harvest of strawberries in our orchard.
