#18: The Barendrecht Sex Case | Rechtpraten the Podcast The Barendrecht sex case is one of the largest and most shocking child abuse cases in recent years. 46-year-old Mels van B. was sentenced this week to 18 years in prison and compulsory psychiatric treatment for abusing dozens of underage girls for years, including his own daughter. In this episode, Royce and Annemiek discuss how the case came to light after an alert mother, how the suspect drugged girls during sleepovers at his home in Barendrecht or at the campsite in Hoeven, and why the court ultimately imposed a harsher sentence than the Public Prosecution Service had requested. They also reflect on the impact on the victims and their parents and on how society should treat perpetrators of these types of crimes. Finally, Royce and Annemiek answer a listener's question: what impact does it have on you as a lawyer to represent someone you know is guilty?
