Big Freedia Has Spoken For The First Time Since Losing Partner Devon Hurst
Big Freedia Has Spoken For The First Time Since Losing Partner Devon Hurst In a heartfelt video, Big Freedia opens up about the profound grief following the loss of their partner, Devin, with whom they shared 20 years, stating, “I have been truly devastated for losing my partner, Devin. We were together for 20 years.” They describe the unique pain of losing someone loved “unconditionally” after such a long time, noting, “It’s nothing like losing someone that you love unconditionally and being together that long length of time.” The past month has been “the most hardest month of my life,” as they struggle to wake up each day without Devin, saying, “Trying to make it and trying to just wake up every day and, you know, not have my partner here.” Big Freedia expresses deep gratitude for the support from fans and their community, mentioning, “I got so many thousands of messages on social media” and “hundreds of flowers that were, you know, delivered to my home.” They also acknowledge their family and the Hurst family, saying, “We really thank you all for all of the love and support that you have been pouring out into us.” Amidst the grieving process, Big Freedia is channeling their emotions into their music, particularly a gospel album they were working on before Devin’s passing. They describe the timing as divine, stating, “It’s all in God’s timing that, you know, all of this is happening.” A single titled “Church” is set to release the following day, and they encourage fans to listen, promising, “It’s, you know, something that will heal the soul,” as they “put my heart and soul into this album.” Despite the emotional toll, Big Freedia must return to work to meet financial obligations, explaining, “Bills don’t stop. You know, people want their money. I’ve got to pay the light bill.” They also support others, noting, “I’ve got, you know, people that depend on me to take care of them and their, you know, their family.” To uplift others, they plan to perform at Pride events throughout the month, aiming to “bring joy to you all in different cities and states and stages,” and invite fans to attend their shows. Reflecting on their journey forward, Big Freedia admits, “I don’t even know how I’m doing it,” but credits their faith, rooted in their church upbringing, for strength, declaring, “With the strength of God, I am trusting him. You know, I have faith. I grew up in the church.” This faith guides them as they navigate healing and life’s challenges while honoring Devin’s memory through their music and performances.
