Orta San Giulio - Italy Walking Tour

Come walking with me along the narrow streets of the small town of Orta San Giulio, facing Lake Orta and the small island of San Giulio, in the Province of Novara in Italy's Piedmont region. This enchanting town is a maze of picturesque streets and narrow cobbled lanes, flanked by old stone walls; the little squares are enlivened by the presence of craft boutiques, antique shops and caffes. Piazza Motta is the main square of the historic centre, the heart of the town, with cafes along one side and Lake Orta along the other side, and beautiful views across to Isola San Giulio. The building at the entrance to the square is one of the most important historic monuments here, the beautiful Palazzo della Comunità, the 16th century town hall with its arcades and frescoed exterior. The best view of the lake is from the Sacro Monte (Sacred Mountain of Orta), a sacred site encompassing twenty-one chapels constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries, that stands right on the hill above the town.
