The Problem With All Quiet On The Western Front (2022)

All Quiet On The Western Front (2022) feels like it's missing something. That’s not to say that it's a bad anti-war film, but that the zoomed out perspective overlooks a key part of the soldier's experience. Since we spend more time with characters like General Friedrichs and Matthias Erzburger, we lose sight of the dissociation suffered by Paul Bäumer and his comrades as they are transformed from patriotic civilians into traumatised veterans who are disillusioned with the idea of dying for their country. This theme is illustrated much more clearly in the 1930 and 1979 adaptations of Erich Remarque's All Quiet On The Western Front.
