Voices of Valor | Larry Underwood | U.S. Army Veteran
*Voices of Valor* is an Operation Watchcap series dedicated to preserving the firsthand stories of America's veterans. In this episode, Vietnam-era U.S. Army veteran *Larry Lee Underwood* reflects on his service as a tank mechanic from 1965–1967. Stationed in **Kitzingen, Germany**, Larry shares memories of maintaining the Army's M60 main battle tanks, M88 recovery vehicles, armored personnel carriers, M151 utility vehicles, and the ever-present "deuce-and-a-half" trucks that kept the mission moving. His stories bring listeners into the motor pool and training areas of Cold War Germany—from changing engines and competing to remove powerpacks in record time, to enduring bitter winter field exercises, and surviving a lightning strike while working on an M88 recovery vehicle during a thunderstorm. More than a history lesson, Larry reflects on duty, discipline, camaraderie, patriotism, and the lessons military service carried throughout his life. At Operation Watchcap, we believe every veteran has a story worth preserving. Through Voices of Valor, we are honored to help ensure those stories are remembered for future generations.
