My favourite Food & Drink related Mudlarking finds! Here is my talk for the Totally Thames Festival
Over the years I have been lucky enough to find some absolutely fabulous artefacts in the River Thames related to food and drink. For example a beautiful Roman Mortarium used in a Roman kitchen two centuries ago to make fish sauces and other delights. I talk about this, and other finds, such as the wonderful traders token from 1657 issued by a Wine Merchant called Brian Appleby who lived in the famous Pudding Lane, where the Great Fire of London started. This September 2021 I gave a talk for the Totally Thames Festival @ThamesFestivalTrust called "A Mudlark's Feast - Bringing to Life Thames Revelry & Dining". In it, I explored the stories behind some of my finds - and went on a virtual journey through Roman kitchens, Tudor taverns, 17th century Pudding Lane and Georgian feasts! It was such great fun and it shows that the smallest of Thames finds can tell the most wonderful stories, and really get your imagination going. I gave the talk at Woods Quay on the River Thames which is the home of the Woods Silverfleet. It was a perfect place for the talk as the backdrop was the Thames and the boats floating past as I spoke! After the talk, guests were able to sample food such as wild boar, eggs with pine nut sauce (a Roman recipe), Estuary Oysters, mead, gin and cordials. There was also the opportunity to try a replica clay pipe which was rather fun.
