Science For Sleep | Why Can’t You Cut a Magnet in Half?
Welcome to Physics With William — your calm place to unwind, relax, and gently drift into sleep while exploring the invisible forces hidden inside matter. Tonight, we softly explore why cutting a magnet in half never gives you a separate north pole and south pole. A magnet has two poles because its magnetic field forms closed loops. The field does not simply begin at one end and stop at the other. Inside magnetic materials, tiny regions called domains line up, creating one larger magnetic field. When you cut the magnet, you do not separate the poles. You create two smaller magnets, each with its own north and south pole. This happens because magnetic poles, as we know them in ordinary matter, always come in pairs. Scientists have searched for single magnetic poles, called magnetic monopoles, but none has been confirmed in nature. Take a slow breath, imagine invisible loops of magnetic field flowing quietly through a small piece of metal, and let Physics With William carry you into calm — where even magnetism feels steady and still.
