Twin Engine Build Recap // Chris Forsberg’s Closed Deck VQ35HR & VR38DETT Prep

This video is a progress recap covering two high-performance engine builds in the shop at the same time: a fully built closed-deck VQ35HR for Formula Drift champion Chris Forsberg’s 370Z demo car, and key prep work on a VR38DETT (GT-R) longblock. Please note, this is not a full step-by-step build video, but a technical overview of where we are at in the assembly process for both powerplants! . Seb takes you through the progress on Chris's VQ35HR engine—a platform we tuned nearly ten years ago that's now being upgraded with a closed-deck block, CP 9:1 pistons, Carrillo rods, ARP 625+ studs, and JWT C1 HR cams. He demonstrates the specific procedure for deleting the factory exhaust retarders using JWT adjustable sprockets and highlights how proper Red Loctite on the rear galley cover hardware prevents catastrophic gasket blowouts. Alongside the VQ, we also dive into longblock prep on a VR38DETT. Seb walks through installing an ATI Super Damper and an AMS Race Oil Filter Adapter, explaining why running full-time filtered oil flow without a bypass is critical for high-output track engines. Build Highlights & Key Details: Chris Forsberg’s VQ35HR: Closed-deck conversion with CP 9:1 pistons, Carrillo rods, ARP 625+ 11mm studs, JWT C1 HR cams, and +1mm oversized valves to maximize volumetric efficiency. Exhaust Retarder Delete: Static timing setup using JWT adjustable sprockets to eliminate the HR exhaust phasers. VR38DETT Prep: Upgrading the oiling and harmonic damper setup using an ATI Super Damper and an AMS bypass-deleted race filter adapter. Specialty Z Standard: Whether it's a VQ or a VR38, we double-check FSM torque specs, thread-lock critical gallery hardware, and set up fail-safe oiling systems for maximum reliability. 0:00 - Build Recap Intro: Overview of the VQ35HR and VR38 builds currently in the shop 1:15 - Chris Forsberg's VQ35HR longblock specs & closed-deck bottom end 3:05 - Rear timing cover prep: Torque sequences and preventing galley gasket blowout 6:35 - Deleting HR exhaust retarders: Indexing JWT adjustable cam gears 10:45 - VR38DETT Longblock Prep: Installing ATI damper and AMS Race Oil Filter Adapter Specialty Z Standard: Whether it's a VQ or a VR38, we double-check FSM torque specs, thread-lock critical gallery hardware, and set up fail-safe oiling systems for maximum reliability.
