[Race Commentary] Explosive finishing kick! Douduce makes a brilliant late charge The Tenno Sho (Autumn) (GⅠ), led by the Hakodate Kinen winner Houou Biscuits. Bellagio Opera, winner of the Osaka Hai, and Tastiera, aiming for her first title since the Japanese Derby, occupied good positions, while Liberty Island, the Triple Crown winner for fillies, also moved up early. Soul Oriens, last year's Satsuki Sho winner, the rising star Lebensteel, who has won two consecutive graded stakes races, and Justin Palace, last year's runner-up, adopted a strategy of staying in the middle to rear of the pack. The 1000-meter mark was reached in 59.9 seconds. In a pace that could be considered relatively slow for this level, Doudeus settled in second to last position. "I knew it wasn't going to be very fast," said jockey Yutaka Take. "But I don't want to run a half-hearted race. I'll avoid unnecessary movements in the first half and bet on a strong finish. If this doesn't work, then so be it," he said, demonstrating his confidence in his partner's finishing speed and his determined positioning. The race headed into the straight. Trying to close in on the tenacious Houou Biscuits were Bellagio Opera on the inside, Liberty Island from the middle of the track, and Tastiera brought to the outside. However, the gap didn't narrow. Then, with a brilliant final sprint, Doudeuce surged forward. With a burst of speed that jockey Yutaka Take praised as "incredible," Doudeuce overtook the horses in front, caught Houou Biscuits, and crossed the finish line 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Tastiera, who had moved up to second place. [History] The Tenno Sho (Autumn) is a race with a long history and tradition, held at Tokyo Racecourse over 2000 meters on turf, where older horses compete for the highest honor. ■Predecessor of the Tenno Sho The "Emperor's Cup," established on May 6, 1905 (Meiji 38), when the Yokohama Japan Race Club received a "silver flower vase with the chrysanthemum crest" from Emperor Meiji, was the predecessor of the Tenno Sho. The following year, in 1906 (Meiji 39), the Imperial Prize was also bestowed upon the Tokyo Race Club, and thereafter, the "Imperial Prize Race" was held at a total of seven race clubs: Hanshin, Fukushima, Sapporo, Hakodate, and Kokura. ■First Race In 1937 (Showa 12), when the various race clubs were integrated into the "Japan Racing Association," the "Imperial Prize Race" was held twice a year, in the east and west, in the spring at Hanshin and in the autumn at Tokyo. The race held in the autumn of that year at Tokyo Racecourse over 2600 meters on turf is considered the first Emperor's Prize. Subsequently, the second race, held in the spring of 1938 (Showa 13), was contested by horses aged three and older over 2700 meters on turf at Hanshin Racecourse. From the third race in the autumn of 1938, the race conditions changed to "4 years and older, 3200 meters on turf," and it was held under the name "Imperial Prize Race" until the spring of 1944 (Showa 19), when it was held privately at Kyoto Racecourse as a test of ability. ■ Interruption and Resumption due to War From the autumn of 1944 (Showa 19), the race was interrupted due to the effects of World War II. After the war, it was revived in the spring of 1947 (Showa 22) under the name "Peace Prize," and from the autumn of the same year, it was renamed the current "Emperor's Prize," with the spring race held at Kyoto Racecourse and the autumn race at Tokyo Racecourse. ■ Changes in Race Conditions From the spring of 1981 (Showa 56), the "elimination system" was abolished, and past winning horses were also granted the right to participate. Previously, Tamamo Cross (Spring and Autumn 1988), Super Creek (Autumn 1989, Spring 1990), Mejiro McQueen (Spring 1991, Spring 1992), Rice Shower (Spring 1993, Spring 1995), Special Week (Spring and Autumn 1999), TM Opera O (Spring and Autumn 2000, Spring 2001), Symboli Kris S (Autumn 2002, 200 Thirteen horses have won the Tenno Sho more than once: Meisho Samson (Spring and Autumn 2007), ...
