William Alexander Pickering enjoyed a colourful and adventurous career in Asia, learning numerous Chinese dialects while working in China and Taiwan before becoming embroiled in what became known as the island's “Camphor War of 1868”. Later in life he returned to Asia, spending several years in the employ of the colonial Straits Settlements government where he eventually achieved the position of Singapore's first ever “Protector of Chinese."
