¿Cómo era (realmente) viajar en el Imperio Español?
Do you think traveling through the Spanish Empire was an epic adventure of galloping knights? Think again. Getting into a carriage or crossing the ocean in the 16th century was, quite literally, risking your life. Mud, bedbugs, seasickness, and months of agony. Today we'll have a drink while we discover the raw and fascinating reality of travel in the Early Modern period. From nobles vomiting in their litters due to seasickness, to flea-infested inns along the Royal Roads of Castile. But the nightmare didn't end on the Iberian Peninsula: crossing the Atlantic in a galleon while eating weevil-infested biscuits or traversing the Andes on muleback were logistical challenges that defy logic. Despite the mud, storms, and vastness of the Americas, the Spanish crown managed to establish the most astonishing postal and transport system of its time, connecting Madrid with Lima and Manila using messengers, horses, and ships. How did they do it? I'll tell you all about it in detail. 👇 Let me know in the comments what you found most unbearable! Was it the weeks spent swallowing dust in a wooden carriage or the months locked in the hold of a galleon? I'm reading your comments. 🔔 If you're passionate about unfiltered historical accounts, SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss the next trip to the past.
