Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine reacts to Supreme Court's birthright citizenship decision

Political and community leaders from Greater Cleveland and across the state of Ohio are reacting after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down President Donald Trump's executive order that sought to limit birthright citizenship in a 6-3 decision on Tuesday. The executive order, signed just after Trump's second inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025, argued that citizenship should not be automatically granted to anyone whose mother or father "was unlawfully present in the United States" at the time of their birth. The order challenged longstanding interpretations of the 14th Amendment and was subsequently blocked by lower courts. The majority opinion, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, affirmed that the executive order violates the 14th amendment of the Constitution, offering equal protections to all Americans. In rejecting the Trump administration's arguments, Roberts wrote that there was "scant evidence for this dramatically revisionist view" that somebody's domicile — the country they reside in — determines their allegiance.
