Summertime Special clips (23/7/1988)
Bobby Davro comperes from Bournemouth and introduces Hilary O'Neil, Roy Walker, Ray Alan, Lulu, and The Mac Band in this old-fashioned variety revue. To be clear, part one is complete, but then we get only a few minutes of part two, followed by a couple of musical numbers that may or may not be from the same episode (I suspect not, but this is exactly how they were on the tape). I think the largest chunk comes from the first episode of series three, making the original broadcast date Saturday, 23rd July, 1988, but I'm willing to be corrected on that. All that said, the most pressing question I need to ask all regulars of this channel: is that Anthony? I mean, one of the dancers appearing alongside 60s songstress Lulu (who despite her debut hit being as far back as 1964 was time-bendingly somehow still in her 30s at this point)? I'm pretty sure it is, and I have to give a big shout (heh heh) out to @schnuppernasengesichtmachen for drawing my attention to this. The routines are even choreographed by Alan Harding - who's also just made it here from Emu's World - and they are Pink Cadillac (originally by Bruce Springsteen), Tap Tap (from the musical The Tap Dance Kid), Hip to Be Square (Huey Lewis and the News), and Sweet Freedom (Michael McDonald). Hip to Be Square offers the perfect opportunity for a direct comparison with this from the previous year: • Emu's Pink Windmill Kids: Hip to Be Square I know which one has better energy and more ambitious choreography, but whatever floats your boat. It's Hosiers all the way down, isn't it? Anyway, without wishing to patronise, obviously this is comedy from the 80s, so let's just say there are a few cheap laughs at the expense of minority groups that wouldn't fly today. Nothing major, but brace yourself. Oh, and do stick around for a full retro ad break from the Yorkshire region - that first one for Optrex contains some rather early human-character CGI. (If you're a copyright holder and have any objections, please feel free to contact me. Alternatively, I haven't monetised the video, so you're welcome to do so, and that way everybody wins.)
