A court has handed down a suspended sentence to a man who was brought to trial on charges of assaulting a perpetrator of school violence against him during his elementary school days. In June 2024, Mr. A encountered Mr. B, a perpetrator of school violence, who was smoking a cigarette on a street in Songpa-gu, Seoul. Overwhelmed by trauma, Mr. A assaulted Mr. B, who suffered injuries including a concussion and a fractured bone around his eye. Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of assault and was sentenced to six months in prison in October 2024. It is reported that during this process, Mr. A attempted suicide due to guilt and symptoms of bipolar disorder following the crime. It is reported that Mr. A is currently working as a cleaning service worker at an accommodation establishment while undergoing psychiatric treatment. Both Mr. A and the prosecution appealed the first-instance ruling, but the second-instance court chose to show leniency. The Seoul Eastern District Court's Criminal Division 1-3, which handled the second trial, sentenced Mr. A to six months in prison, suspended for two years, on May 21. The appellate court explained the reasons for the sentencing, stating, "Mr. A met Mr. B by chance and, overwhelmed by painful memories of bullying he suffered in elementary school, was unable to control his emotions and committed violence," adding that "he deeply regrets and is remorseful for his wrongdoing." The court further explained that Mr. A "deposited an additional 4 million won for the first trial and another 4 million won for the second trial" on behalf of Mr. B. During the second trial, Mr. B petitioned for a harsh punishment, arguing that "the total of the deposited funds does not cover medical expenses," but the court stated that "the fact that Mr. A is a child of a single parent and his mother is a recipient of basic livelihood support must be taken into consideration." Furthermore, the court explained the reason for the reduced sentence, noting that "Mr. A is currently receiving psychiatric treatment and working as a cleaning service worker, and has pledged to make efforts to compensate Mr. B for the damages." Neither Mr. A nor the prosecutor appealed the second-instance ruling, so the judgment has been finalized.
