If you want to visit Salem and you're in Boston, take the subway from the North Station and pay to Zone 3. When you exit the station, you'll find a RED line; follow it, and it will take you to all the must-see places. If you're going around Halloween, I recommend arriving early (it gets very crowded, and the town is small, so there aren't many hotels).
