What is an overspeed governor for an elevator? If it fails, how are passengers kept safe?#subscribe
Understanding the Elevator Governor: A Silent Guardian in Vertical Transportation In the world of elevators, safety isn't just a feature, it's a non-negotiable design principle. One unsung hero in this equation is the governor. Let's take a moment to break it down What Is an Elevator Governor? ~ A governor is a mechanical overspeed detection and activation device. ~ If an elevator exceeds a preset speed in the downward direction, the governor trips, activating the safety gear to bring the car to a controlled stop. It's like the elevator's "last line of defense", ensuring passengers stay safe even in the rare event of component failure. Types of Governors: 1. Centrifugal Governors (most common) Uses spinning weights that expand with speed. Trips in the event of free fall - when the elevator exceeds the normal rated speed in the down direction. 2. Electronic Governors Used in modern gearless systems. ~ Detect overspeed via encoders or sensors and signal the controller. 3. Dual Governors ~ Often used in high-speed elevators with separate tripping points for car and counterweight. How Does It Work? The elevator's governor rope is connected to the car frame and loops around the governor sheave. When the elevator travels too fast, the sheave spins faster. If speed exceeds the tripping threshold, centrifugal force causes the flyweights to engage: ~Mechanical systems activate a cam that locks the sheave. ~This locks the rope, which in turn activates the safety gear via a tensioning linkage. ~ On gearless systems, an electrical signal may initiate braking. Design Considerations: ~Must be tamper-proof and independent of the elevator controller. ~ Tripping speeds are typically 115% of rated speed for traction elevators. ~Must reset manually post-activation, no shortcuts allowed in safety resets! Where Are Governors Used? ~Traction Elevators (Geared & Gearless) ~High-rise systems with high speeds ~Counterweight safeties (in special applications) -Where there are extra floors below the last served floor Why does this matter? Because understanding the governor's role is not just for engineers, inspectors, technicians, and even owners benefit from knowing what keeps an elevator safe when all else fails. In my 10 years in the industry, I've seen governors that saved lives, quietly doing their job, unnoticed until needed. #friend subscribe my channel #lift #electrical #homeelevator #What Is Osg? #Name Of The Osg Parts ? #How Does It Work? #How Many Types Of Osg Using In Lift ? #What is Centrifugal Governors? #What is Hydraulic Governors ? #What is Electromagnetic Governors ? #What is Electronic Governors? #What Is Tension Pully (pit Pully) ? #How Many Types Of Tension Pully In Lift ? #What Is Horizontal Tension Weight ? #What Is Vertical Tension Weight #Bi-directional ? #Uni-directional? #Specifications Of Osg ? #Over Speed Governer Is Compulsory? #What Happens If A Lift Speed Governor Fails? #How To Choose The Right Lift Governor Fit For Your Needs ? #What Are The Key Features Of Reliable Lift Speed Governors? #How Often Do Lift Governors Need To Be Replaced? #Renovated Lift.
