Andrzej Bernard Buncol was born on September 21, 1959, in Gliwice—a city with two names, Gleiwitz in German, on the Silesian border, where Polish and German cultures have intertwined for generations. His path to the top began with Piast Gliwice, then moved on to Ruch Chorzów, where he regularly scored goals as a midfielder, and finally to Legia Warsaw and four seasons with the country's biggest club. In February 1980, at the age of twenty, he first wore the first-team jersey against Morocco, and a year later, on May 2, 1981, at the Silesian Stadium, he scored the winning goal in the qualifying round against East Germany, bringing Poland closer to the World Cup in Spain. In the summer of 1982, in La Coruña, he etched himself into national memory with a move that commentator Jan Ciszewski described as "Boniek to Buncol, a wonderful move"—a goal in a 5-1 victory over Peru. A few weeks later, Poland won the bronze medal at the World Cup, defeating France 3-2 on July 10, and Buncol, at the age of twenty-two, found himself among names like Boniek, Smolarek, Żmuda, and Młynarczyk, who was voted the discovery of the year in 1982 in a "Piłka Nożna" poll. Four years later, everything came to an end. On June 11, 1986, in Mexico, in a match against England, Buncol wore the red and white jersey for the last time – the tally stopped at fifty-one appearances, never to be seen again. At the same time, he was negotiating a move to German side FC 08 Homburg, and after accepting German citizenship in 1987 (while retaining his Polish passport), a label he never accepted stuck with him in his home country. This story is a conflict between two versions – one sporting and one political – without a single original document to define who this player truly was for his own national team. Meanwhile, on the other side of the border, Buncol was enjoying the best years of his career. He played 146 matches for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, and in the 1988 UEFA Cup final against Espanyol, after losing the first leg 3-0, his team overturned the deficit to 3-0 and won 3-2 on penalties – Buncol assisting Cha Bum-kun's header. He later played for Fortuna Düsseldorf, and after retiring, he returned to Bayer Leverkusen as a youth coach, where he coached, among others, a young Arkadiusz Milik.
