India Arms Up With AK-203 “Sher,” A Rifle Made-In-India For Our Armed Forces India has released a new tactical video of the AK-203 rifle, officially renamed “Sher”, marking a major step in the country’s small-arms modernisation programme. The AK-203 is replacing the INSAS rifle that entered service in the 1990s and is now being produced at the Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) facility in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. Under a ₹5,100-crore contract signed in 2021, India will manufacture over 6 lakh rifles domestically, with full indigenisation targeted for December 2025. The rifle fires 7.62×39 mm rounds, delivers a firing rate of approx. 700 rounds per minute, and functions across all terrains. Production began in January 2023 after earlier delays due to pricing issues and COVID-19. IRRPL plans to deliver the entire order by December 2030, ahead of the original 2032 deadline. The AK-203 ‘Sher’ will first be issued to frontline units deployed along the LAC and other sensitive borders.
