Aloha, Robert Stehlik I talk about life vests in this video at 13:35 Regarding floatation devices: In Hawaii the coast guard considers SUP's surf craft that don't require a pfd. Always wear a leash, which makes the board your floatation device. In most places in the US, a coast guard approved floatation device is required and should always be worn on the body, not tied to the board. Most drownings occur when the paddler is separated from the board, in which case a pfd tied to the board is not only useless, it gives you a false sense of security and your board will blow away even faster with a pfd tied to it. "Mastering Standup Paddleboarding: Your Ultimate Beginner's Guide Ready to dive into the thrilling world of standup paddleboarding (SUP)? Whether you're gliding across calm waters or catching waves, mastering the basics is essential for a successful SUP experience. Follow these expert tips to get started on your SUP journey: Get the Right Gear: Start by choosing the right board and paddle for your skill level and preferences. Consider factors like board size, stability, and construction material. Inflatable SUPs (iSUPs) are a popular choice for beginners due to their portability and ease of storage. Find Your Balance: Stand in the center of your board with your feet shoulder-width apart. Keep your knees slightly bent and your core engaged to help you maintain stability on the water. Practice balancing on your board in calm, flat water before attempting more challenging conditions. Perfect Your Paddle Technique: Proper paddle technique is key to efficient paddling and maneuvering on the water. Hold your paddle with one hand on the shaft and the other on the T-grip. Dip the blade fully into the water and use your core muscles to pull it back, keeping your arms straight. Start in Calm Water: Begin your SUP journey in calm, flat water to build your confidence and skills. Practice paddling forward, turning, and stopping before venturing into more challenging conditions like waves or currents. Learn How to Fall: Falling off your board is a natural part of learning to SUP, so don't be afraid to take a tumble. To minimize injury, fall away from your board and try to fall flat rather than on your knees or elbows. Always wear a leash to keep your board attached to you in case of falls. Stay Safe: Prioritize safety on the water by wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) and familiarizing yourself with local water conditions and regulations. Avoid paddling in hazardous weather or water conditions, and always paddle within your skill level. With these tips and tricks, you'll be well on your way to mastering standup paddleboarding like a pro. So grab your board, hit the water, and enjoy the adventure of SUP!"
