The game stylizedly recreates the real-life attack on Tsushima Island, placing the player in the role of Jin Sakai, a fictional samurai who faces the dilemma between the honor of bushidō and the guerrilla tactics necessary to resist the enemy. The game is based on historical facts but adopts a fantasy character, constructing a cinematic narrative that values ​​both visual authenticity and creative freedom. In 2025, the same team released "Ghost of Yōtei," a spiritual sequel set in 1603, at the beginning of the Edo period, featuring new characters and settings around Mount Yōtei, expanding the universe's aesthetic and thematic approach, albeit without a direct connection to Jin's journey. In this sequel, I discuss the chanbara subgenre of GHOST OF TSUSHIMA, analyze the gameplay, narrative, character development, and values, and explain why the game is a fiction far removed from historical events, anachronistically romanticizing samurai and the ideal of honor. Finally, I explain that Ghost of Tsushima is a fanfic that makes some sense today.
