DON’T BE THE TOKEN: What Nolan Wells’ Death Must Teach Our People
Eighteen-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island, Mississippi, and was found dead two days later. His family is demanding a complete and transparent investigation after questions emerged concerning conflicting accounts, his recovered cellphone, missing data, and why his phone and keys reportedly left the island without him. Authorities have stated that foul play has not been established, the official autopsy findings remain pending, and the investigation is continuing. Chief Steve examines the deeper lesson this tragedy raises for Aboriginal Americans, American Indians and copper-colored Aborigines: we cannot allow our children to become isolated, unsupported or treated like tokens in social spaces. This is not a message telling our people that every person outside our community is an enemy. It is a warning that familiarity, friendship and acceptance must never replace awareness. No friend group, racial identity or social label automatically guarantees safety. We must teach our children to: • Stay connected to family and community • Share their location and transportation plans • Never abandon or become separated from their group • Keep possession of their phone, identification and keys • Recognize unsafe behavior and changing group dynamics • Maintain independent transportation or an exit plan • Check on one another and never leave anyone behind This discussion also remembers Tamla Horsford, who was found dead after attending an overnight gathering in Forsyth County, Georgia, in 2018. Her death was officially ruled accidental, and a later GBI investigation did not support criminal charges, although her family and supporters continued to question the circumstances. We must rebuild the village—not through fear, indiscriminate hatred or unsupported accusations, but through preparation, communication, accountability and genuine protection of one another. We do not need another family searching for answers.
