LA SPEDIZIONE DEI MILLE
The Expedition of the Thousand was the enterprise led by Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1860, when approximately 1,089 volunteers set out from Quarto (Genoa) to liberate Southern Italy from Bourbon rule. Landing in Marsala, the Thousand achieved rapid victories in Sicily and then throughout the rest of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, supported by local populations and new volunteers who swelled the army to thousands. Garibaldi handed over the conquered territories to Victor Emmanuel II, paving the way for the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
