Why Most Guitar Makers Get This Wrong: Live Back vs Dead Back

If you’d like to own my work: https://nkfguitars.com/custom-design If you’d like to learn more about Modal tuning from Trevor Gore: https://nkfguitars.com/Modal-tuning Most guitar makers believe the back of a guitar should vibrate. In practice, that idea is often misunderstood — and sometimes works against the sound. If you spend time around guitar making, you’ll eventually come across the idea of a live back. The logic is simple. More vibration should mean more sound. But guitars are not that simple. In this video I go through the difference between live backs and dead backs, how they relate to the main body modes of the instrument, and why many guitars end up somewhere in between — with a back that behaves unpredictably. I also explain why I build with a stiff, “dead” back, and how that changes the role of the soundboard and the player. This isn’t about right or wrong. Both approaches can work. But it’s worth understanding what’s actually happening, rather than assuming one idea must be better because it sounds convincing.
