How do heat pumps work?

I think that heat pumps are essential in our attempts to reduce emissions in the UK. With the one of the big challenges left in tackling our emissions being heat, I see Heat Pumps as a big part of that process. Finding a way to produce heat without burning fossil fuels, or using fossil fuels somewhere in the process, is essential to reducing emissions as quickly as possible. I am convinced. But, I am very conscious that heat pumps could appear to be a bit magic, no fuel, but a warm home, and warm water.... what is that about? How do heat pumps work? Do they work in winter? How? Do they ... can they heat when it is freezing outside? Well in this video I try to explain how heat pumps work with some basic thermodynamics.
