This is a shortened version, cut to width. (According to AI, the information content is 120%, but as a video, it's only 75%, and because it contains a lot of niche information, it might be too long and cause viewers to leave. 😅) The following isn't the first one, but it has more content than the uploaded video. --- Introduction Thank you for watching. Scott Speedster 40 For 70,000 yen (tax included), this is the only road bike from a major, top-tier brand that weighs under 9kg. It's surprisingly fast for an entry-level model. Honestly, I don't understand why it's still on the market. That's the Scott Speedster 40 RIM. --- Introduction The Scott Speedster 40, Scott's entry-level model, underwent a design overhaul for the 2018 model year. This model is a brilliant redesign and update of an already popular and proven machine. It's an excellent all-around road bike with modern 28c tires and a "proper" gear ratio. Pros: Versatile gear range 28c tires as standard Full-coverage fenders/mudguards can be fitted Lightweight (around 10kg) Cons: Brakes are somewhat weak Not a race bike No particularly outstanding features ----- Overview This is a model change from around 2018. The specifications have pretty much reached their peak around this point. Surprisingly, the cables are internally routed. While it has an aluminum fork instead of a carbon fork, the wider tires more than adequately absorb shocks. Regarding handling, reliable journalists from overseas cycling media outlets seem to have no complaints whatsoever. It also ranked highly in a UK review of 10 models under £1000. When this model was released, it was lighter than the previous model and, unusually for a model in this price range, the cables were internally routed. The fork was changed to aluminum to reduce costs. Furthermore, while the original models used inexpensive, non-cartridge-type Tektro brakes, current models use cartridge brakes. That said, brake pads and other components can be replaced. Incidentally, the original Tektro brake calipers are not long-reach. However, they are mid-reach, not short-reach like 105 or Ultegra. Short Reach (39-51mm) Mid-reach (41-57mm) Tektro R315 Long Reach (55-73mm or more) Tektro R559, etc. Scott adopted 28mm Schwalbe tires instead of 25mm Kenda tires to counteract the potential stiffness of the all-metal fork. This was quite advanced at the time. It remains very effective today. 28c is excellent. The original Schwalbe tires on the Lugano model measured around 29mm. This allows for lower air pressure without sacrificing puncture resistance, improving ride comfort and effectively compensating for the negative aspects of the aluminum fork. However, these are incredibly heavy metal-bead tires costing around $20. Removing them for puncture repairs might be difficult due to their stiffness. Also, each tire weighs 400g. That said, tires are consumables, and a decent mid-range tire would probably bring the weight down to around 280g. Just changing the tires alone could reduce the weight by about 250g. Overseas measurements of the stock steel wheels often show a weight of around 1.9kg. Apparently, there are a lot of good quality clincher wheels available on the used market now. More accurately, this bicycle has an excellent catalog specification of 10.4kg, but the weight is mainly due to the tires and wheels. Simply changing the tires and wheels to something mid-range would bring the bicycle down to the 9kg range. It's a Claris model! With an RS200 crank and square taper BB, this weight is quite impressive. I don't understand why this is still unsold. Perhaps they simply haven't supplied much of it. ---- • Versatility I imagine the frame itself has ample tire clearance to accommodate the stock 28mm tires and mid-arch brake calipers. While 32mm might be an exaggeration, I imagine around 30mm would fit. Another advantage is the fender mounting points. Even with 28mm wide tires, there's enough clearance for not only aftermarket blade-type fenders but also full-length fenders. Fenders significantly improve the practicality of the bicycle. It would have been nice to have a rear carrier mount like on the Specialized Allez, but that's not included. However, it's still possible to attach a carrier or use a system that attaches to the seatpost. Another welcome change in this 2018 refreshed model is the wider gear range. The front is compact (50-34), and the rear cog (cassette) has been changed from 11-30T to 32T. At the time, 11-28 was common, so 11-32 is also advanced. Recently, Shimano's CUES and the newly announced R4000 feature 11-36 cog specifications, which, for us (including myself), are ...
