How to Halter a Horse

In this video you will learn how to halter a horse Pick up the horse’s halter. Each halter has a nametag with the horse’s name on it. When you enter the stall, make sure you shut the gate behind you. Once you are in the closed stall, walk toward the horse. Make sure you do not walk directly behind the horse. Place your leadrope over the horse’s neck and create a loop. With this loop you can lead the horse toward the closed gate. This is very helpful especially if the horse is busy eating food! If the horse has a fly mask on, remove it and place it by the gate so it is easy to put back on when the horse is finished with their lesson. Hold the noseband and the crownpiece of the halter. The noseband makes a circle, and your leadrope will come out of the bottom. The crownpiece is the strap that will go behind the horse’s ears and buckle to the left side of the halter. Once the halter is on the horse, remove the leadrope from the horse’s neck and lead them out of the stall. Make sure your leadrope does not make a closed loop around your hand. This is dangerous as the rope could wrap around your hand or fingers. Have the leadrope in an open loop in your left hand and hold the rope 6 inches under the buckle with your right. Do not hold the buckle as this could injure your hand. Please shut the stall gate behind you. To unhalter the horse, undo the buckle on the left side of the halter. Fly mask tip—Prior to taking the halter off, put the fly mask on so you can unbuckle and slip the halter out from underneath the fly mask
