Morto Cosimo Di Lauro, il boss di Gomorra che innescò la prima faida di Scampia

Cosimo Di Lauro, the Gomorrah boss who sparked the first Scampia feud, has died. The former leader of the Di Lauro clan, Cosimo Di Lauro, who was held under the 41 bis regime in the Milanese prison, has died in Opera prison in Milan. Imprisoned since 2005, he was the son of Paolo Di Lauro, clan leader of the eponymous Camorra organization in Secondigliano, and brother of Marco, also held under the harsh prison regime in Sardinia. Cosimo, 49, was believed by investigators from the Naples Antimafia Department to be the one who sparked the first Scampia feud, which resulted in approximately one hundred deaths. Cosimo Di Lauro's mental health had apparently been compromised for some time: his lawyers had become unable to communicate with their client. Heir and eldest of ten children of boss Paolo di Lauro Ciruzzo 'o milionario, Cosimo Di Lauro was found guilty of numerous murders: he was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Massimo Marino, cousin of boss Gennaro Marino, known as "Mckay," considered the "right-hand man" of clan boss Paolo Di Lauro. On December 13, 2008, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for instigating the murder of Gelsomina Verde, the former girlfriend of Gennaro Notturno, a member who had joined the secessionist group. Verde was tortured and killed to reveal his hiding place on November 21, 2004. Her body was burned, before being acquitted of the charge in December 2010. He was then sentenced to 15 years in prison for mafia-related criminal association. Cosimo Di Lauro was also recently sentenced to life in prison for the murders of Raffaele Duro and Salvatore Panico, and Federico Bizzarro, which occurred in Mugnano before the 2004 feud. He is also accused of instigating the murder of Carmine Attrice, whose defense is scheduled for June 21st before the Second Section of the Naples Court of Assizes. The boss was arrested on January 21, 2005, in the Terzo Mondo neighborhood of the Secondigliano district, another stronghold of organized crime and the Di Lauro family. To prevent him from being handcuffed, objects were thrown at law enforcement from balconies. Nine months later, his father, Paolo, was also arrested, hiding in a house not far from the family home on Via Cupa dell'Arco. In all trials held since 2005, a request was made to verify the defendant's mental capacity and his capacity to stand trial. This request was always denied by the defense, although since 2007, Cosimo had been exhibiting signs of mental instability, as reported in the reports submitted: auditory pseudo-hallucinations, anxious depressive reactions, and sleep disturbances. Yesterday morning, defense attorney Saverio Senese was informed: "Your client has died." The cause of death is still unknown.
