/i/ - the UNHAPPY Vowel
The pronunciation of the ending of words such as HAPPY, FUNNY and RECIPE in British English is a bit ambiguous. In this video I look at the results from a poll about how to pronounce HAPPY, and explain the different versions: /ˈhapi/ /ˈhapiː/ /ˈhapɪ/ There are reasons for and against using each of these, but which one is correct? In the lesson we explore phonetics vs phonemics, RP vs GB, and mouth positioning for vowel sounds. NOTE: the /a/ symbol reflects the modern set of phonemes used by the OED, some dictionaries use /æ/ - there is no difference for the purposes of this video. #phonetics #pronunciation
