African Violet Hot Water Treatment

In this video, I will show you how to hot water treat African Violets as a natural way to irradicate pests and a way to shorten the isolation time period from months to days. This method can be used for Mites, Cyclamen Mites, Thrips, Mealies, etc. If you are treating a rack full of plants or more for Mites, keep your plants isolated in the bags for 40 days after the last plant is treated and clean your room at least 2x with 10% bleach/water mix including all shelving, lights, clip on lights, etc. Plant supplies should be packed and removed from the room for 6 months. If you have other non-AV plants in the room, they need to be moved out permanently. Reference Video:    • How I got rid of the broad/cyclamen mite f...   Tools: Digital Water Thermometer for Liquid, Candle, Instant Read with Waterproof for Food, Meat, Milk, Long Probe Brand used: Yacumama; Thermos Stainless King wide mouth food jar: Thermos Vacuum Insulated Stainless Steel Wide Mouth Carafe (THS Series) (1.0L); Vinyl gloves (I use some tongs to remove them from the packet when I am working); Ziplock XL sandwich bags (may use smaller or larger sizes as needed). Instructions: using clean gloves, label pots for plants to be treated; set up extra pots. Write names on pots with permanent marker or stakes; using clean soil mix that is dampened, add soil to pots. Follow directions in the video to hot water treat the African Violets. I use a screen insert to protect my drain on the dirty side. Water temperature should be 110.3 to 110.8; hotter will kill the plant. Decapitate plant, insert crown first into thermos. Treat for 15 minutes. Change gloves. Remove crown; remove some lower leaves, set the crown in the planting medium; let cool for 15-30 minutes. Bag, rest for 24 hours, and place in plant room under clip on light until new roots form. See note above if treating for mites. When processing 2 plants per thermos, make sure one is variegated or a different leaf type. On the post-it note or paper, write the names of the plants and put an identification notation so you can tell the plants apart when you take them out, for example V for Variegated.
