2026: Rethinking Athletics #5

In this episode of the “Rethinking Athletics” series, we examine the role of the coach and the tremendous responsibility that comes with leadership in youth sports. Modern coaching often falls into two extremes: passive leadership that lacks standards and accountability, or authoritarian leadership that relies on fear and control. Neither reflects the biblical model of leadership. Scripture teaches that authority is a stewardship given by God and is intended to serve, develop and lead others toward maturity. In this episode, we discuss: -The biblical purpose of leadership and authority -Why coaches are discipling athletes whether they realize it or not -The relationship between correction, accountability and growth -The importance of teachability and humility -How coaches shape character far beyond athletic performance -Why excellence matters as an act of stewardship -And how athletics can become a classroom for teaching discipline, perseverance and the Glory of God Coaching is about much more than developing athletes.
