These are the Only Fonts You Need | A Few Basic Typefaces Documentary | Lella and Massimo Vignelli
Check out our Book Shop: https://bookshop.org/lists/design-doc... One of the most controversial things Massimo Vignelli had ever said was that in design we only need a few basic typefaces to be successful. If you don’t know the Vignelli’s, they were a power couple in design practicing from the 60s when they moved from Italy to the US, until the 2010s when they unfortunately passed. Lella and Massimo Vignelli were some of the most prolific, talented designers from this era, doing everything from designing elegant home furnishings to simplifying complex transportation systems like the NYC subway map through their powerful information design. Massimo made this statement largely as a rebuttal to the new freedom those outside the field of design had to play with type through the new computer age. People were using newly developed typefaces, stretching and squishing them to their liking, and often as a result creating hideous works that fall outside of the rules of type that had been around for ages. Through his exhibition of a few basic typefaces, Massimo hoped not to trash every other typeface in existence, but to show the breadth and variety of work you can create by properly using only a few of the classics. Many sell the idea that Lella and Massimo only used these typefaces, which is simply not true. While their use of Helvetica and the other typefaces in this exhibition was certainly prevalent in much of their work, they used and even created many other typefaces over their careers. With that disclaimer out of the way, let’s jump into what the Vignelli’s considered the few basic typefaces you need in your toolkit to be a successful designer. Whether or not you choose to use them is up to you, but being aware of the classics and what makes them so successful is powerful knowledge even when selecting other typefaces.
