The Summit Runner Approach Shoe: The First Approach Shoe from Escape Climbing

Key features of the Summit Runner approach shoe: Design and Fit: The shoe has a tennis shoe look and feel. The laces are brought down longer than a standard tennis shoe to allow for a tighter cinch. The "last" (the shape of the foot) is slightly wider, and the shoe is fitted a little bigger than a standard approach shoe, so the speaker suggests sizing down about a half size. Upper Material: The upper has a very tight, thick weave knit with a dual pattern, designed to resist tearing and getting "messed up" in the toe zone, which is where previous approach shoes often failed first from jamming in cracks or downclimbing. This area is "beefed up" while the rest of the upper remains lighter due to holes. Midsole: The midsole is made from a proprietary EMP foam. This foam gives back about 40% more energy than a classic EVA midsole, providing a nice spring, similar to a trail runner. The midsole is squishier and bigger than a standard approach shoe to be comfortable for all-day wear, like when working at a gym or hiking far into a project. Outsole: The shoe features a full Vibram MegaGrip outsole. Climbing Zone: It includes a flat zone on the toe, similar to a climbing shoe, called the "climbing zone" for stepping on rocks and crimps. Treads: Unlike a climbing shoe, it has treads, which are shaped almost like suction cups. These treads are designed to be nice and grippy on rock and reliable when walking on mud, gravel, or other surfaces. Edge Zone: It has a "full edge zone" that extends all the way down into the heel, which provides support and a better platform for stepping on things and climbing. Heel Structure: The heel structure is good for "stopping power" and retains some climbing zone in the heel. The shoes are available in two colorways: a retro darker colorway and a lighter colorway with red in the heel. They can be found at escapeclimbing.com.
