In the 1910s, there was a strong growth in small semi-automatic pistols in 6.35 or 7.65 Browning calibers, and the German company wanted to take advantage of this new market. Sauer & Sohn then developed a fairly basic pistol primarily for police use, and German officers also purchased them. The Model 1913 isn't necessarily the most famous German pistol, but it was very popular, with over 150,000 being produced, not counting its derivatives: the Model 1919, Model 1926, and others.
