Gigilos and Volakias Summit - The White Mountains of Crete | Season 1 - Episode 3 (4K)

The White Mountains of Crete is a unique mountain range unlike any other in the world. At an altitude of 2000 meters they form an alpine desert, with an otherworldly scenery. The terrain is dark full of dips, potholes and craters, while the mountaintops are strikingly white, because of the limestone. This unique geological formations create a trully incredible lunar landscape, that enchants any who will hike there. Follow us on our journey to hike and explore the White Mountains of Crete. In the span of 20 episodes we will hike in the alpine desert, reach the most extraordinary peaks, visit their breathtaking gorges. In this episode we ascend to the summit of Gigilos (2080m), following an amazing route from Omalos to the peak. There many points of interest along the way. After reaching the peak of Gigilos we also hike to the neigbour peak of Volakias (2116m), which is quite different albeit being so close. I consider this hike to have the most beautiful route in the whole range. The trail goes by the arch of Gigilos and the wild rocky terrain, providing such an incredible experience. And although Gigilos is amazing the true gem is Volakias. This mountain is truly unique as you can see in the video and it has an amazing view from the Summit. Unfortunately due to the clouds I could not fully demonstrate this , but you can see Paleochora, Selouda and Agio Pavlos beach and at the same time gaze at the massif of the White Mountains to the east. Giglios means the rotten mountain, you can easily see why the name was given, just by looking at the mountain. Volakias means stone, a rather suitable name as weel duw to the unique stony forrest.
