AGROUND - The Eventual Fate Of All Sailors Who Dare Leave The Dock | Sailboat Story 254
While waiting to be hauled out in St Mary's, we had to anchor in a narrow creek with a 6ft tide. For several days we were just fine in this spot, but we eventually ran into trouble when the wind switched directions at slack tide. We were blown into the shallows and then as the tide went down, we were stuck hard aground. This normally wouldn't have been all that bad, but with the larger tides, and being set down on the bottom practically at high tide, the boat eventually leaned way, waaay, waaaaaaaay over as the tide went out. It wasn't anything really dangerous, as long as we didn't slip or fall while maneuvering around the boat, but it was certainly uncomfortable for 6 hours or so. Tambi had the hardest time and experienced a panic attack when the boat went from being balanced on her keel, to falling over to nearly 45 degrees over the course of 5 seconds or so. In the end, all was well and we happily re-anchored when the tide came back up, but it was an experience that we'd certainly like to avoid again if at all possible. the funny thing is that this is one of those situations that is almost unavoidable if you travel long enough by sailboat. Thankfully our situation was not a dangerous one, but it's still one that has made us THAT MUCH more cautious about choosing an appropriate anchorage and keeping a close eye on the wind... especially at slack tide while anchored within a narrow creek.
