La capitale de l’Éthiopie a été bâtie sur un plateau à plus de 2 000 mètres d’altitude, au centre du pays. Elle fut bâtie par L’empereur Ménélik pour L’impératrice Taytu Betul, L'impératrice Taytu qui a fait preuve d'un grand courage durant la bataille d'adowa, menant elle-même ses hommes au combat face à l'envahisseur.
