Brazilians are crossing the border into Paraguay in search of weight-loss drugs. In the neighboring country, laboratories produce components of the popular slimming pen sold in Brazil only with a prescription due to health risks. However, on the other side of the border, these products are easily found without a prescription. The most sought-after substance is tirrizepatide, originally developed to treat diabetes, but used indiscriminately by those who want to lose weight. While in Brazil it is sold as an applicator pen costing around €564.20 for 15mg, in Paraguay the ampoules cost approximately €96.72. Despite Paraguayan regulations requiring a prescription for the sale of these medications, many pharmacies do not follow this rule. The ease of access and attractive prices fuel a growing black market among Brazilians who buy both for their own use and for illegal resale.
