Helio Castroneves (2001, 2002, 2009, 2021) becomes the fourth 4 time winner along with AJ Foyt (61, 64, 67, 77), Al Unser Sr. (70, 71, 78, 87) & Rick Mears (79, 84, 88, 91). Largest mass gathering of people (135,000) since COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic on March 11, 2020. The 104th Indianapolis 500, originally schedule for May 24, 2020 was postponed until August 23, 2020 and run with no spectators due to the pandemic. Race winner, Takuma Sato, became a two time Indianapolis 500 Champion (2017, 2020) For 2021, the Speedway capacity was capped at 40% in order to comply with COVID-19 social distancing recommendations. Additionally, fans were required to wear face masks in order to attend. On race day, there were many more than 135,000 fans in the grandstands and very few people wore face masks. No complaints. It was a beautiful day.
