The Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) allows you to automatically disable duplicate connections in Ethernet so that a ring and broadcast storm do not form in the network. The STP protocol is defined in the IEEE 802.1D standard. STP advantages: Reliability of connections between switches. Protection against configuration errors. STP works in 3 stages: 1. Electing a root switch 2. Determining the shortest paths to the root switch 3. Disabling all other connections To implement STP, switches send Bridge Protocol Data Units (BPDU) control messages every 2 seconds to the STP multicast address 01:80:C2:00:00:00. STP Protocol Extensions.
