If you have play in your steering that you just can't figure out, it might be coming from the main steering shaft. If you like the tack weld method but don't own a welder, you could simply take your shaft to a local shop that welds, a muffler shop would be a possible choice, and have them throw on a couple quick tack welds onto the shaft for you.
