Iltijah Mufti said the J&K government released draft recruitment rules for revenue services. For posts like Naib Tehsildar, Girdawar, Patwari, working knowledge of Urdu is no longer compulsory. Protesters’ side: “Urdu is the soul of our literature, the soul of our culture. In J&K, Kashmiri, Gujri, Pahari, Punjabi - everyone has a different mother tongue, but Urdu is the common link. All land records have been in Urdu since 1887. Removing it is an attack on our roots.” PDP’s stand is also that this “undermines the linguistic and cultural identity”. Government/BJP’s side: J&K has 5 official languages. Keeping only Urdu mandatory is an “unfair barrier” for candidates from Jammu.
