About my city... Santiago also known as Santiago de Chile, is the capital and largest city of Chile, as well as one of the largest cities in the Americas. It was on February 25, 1897 when the then President Federico Errázuriz Echaurren decreed the subdivision of the Ñuñoa commune, from which a new commune was born in the eastern sector, this was Providencia. Providencia was then an incipient town of 5,000 inhabitants. The existence of the convent of the Sisters of Divina la Providencia, located on the southern sidewalk of the main road, motivated the inhabitants to call that road the Callejón de la Providencia, giving rise to the name of the commune. The beginnings of Providencia were precarious: there was no electricity, drinking water, sewerage, schools, or commerce; the landscape was rural.
