Mongooses Found Something Strange on This Buffalo Calf

A family of banded mongooses spends the day searching the African savanna for beetles, larvae, termites, and other small prey. Then one mongoose notices something unusual on a young African buffalo calf. Dense clusters of hard ticks are attached around the calf’s ears, jaw, neck, belly, and legs. The parasites may provide an unexpected source of food, but reaching them means moving beneath massive buffalo bodies, sharp horns, and dangerous hooves.
