Remote Papua New Guinea for Wildlife Travellers: Manus Travel Plan

Manus Island in Papua New Guinea is one of the most remote places I have travelled to. Reaching here from Port Moresby takes time, with Lorengau as the main town and a stopping point before heading into the forests. My goal on this journey was to see the Superb Pitta, a rare bird found only on this island. With my local guide Samuel, I trekked through dense and humid rainforest in search of this elusive species. Samuel also shared his conservation work and the challenges of protecting Manus Island’s biodiversity. Beyond birding, the island carries stories of its WWII past, traditional carvings, and marine life from emerald snails to vibrant coral reefs. Please consider subscribing to Window Seat with Sabu for more stories on nature, remote places, and wildlife travel. I thank Endemic Explorer and its crew for organising this challenging tour.
