Topo Maps Part 9: Using a Map and Compass to Locate Yourself
Beginning hikers use a "bead on a string" approach to navigation, following trails and turning at intersections but otherwise not knowing where they are. When this approach fails, they're lost and can't find their way back. Or hikers may have navigation devices but if those devices fail, they're on their own. Advanced hiking skills include knowing how to combine a topographic map and a compass to determine your location. This video shows you how. The music at the start and end of the video is from "The Talons of Adventure, the Antlers of Romance," by Doctor Turtle.
