GNOSSIENNE - Homage to 'Papa' Shawn Based on Ted Shawn's 1919 solo GNOSSIENNE (A PRIEST OF KNOSSOS), I staged my homage to the founding father of American Modern Dance some years ago for students of the National Ballet Academy in Amsterdam. 'Denishawn pieces remain more than just charming by virtue of their clear, simple designs and their structural presence of mind. I can't imagine that many other choreographers in 1920 were interested in the kind of unfussy, hypnotically repetitive choreography displayed in Shawn's 'Gnossienne'.
