Bantry There are moments in life when time quietly catches up with you, suddenly, all at once. You look around and realise that years have passed in the blink of an eye, and that somehow you’ve stepped into the person who’s charting their own course now. Bantry was written in the middle of one of those moments. I wrote this song while playing a gig in Bantry Bay. I was six months sober at the time, standing at a familiar crossroads, and the urge to slip backwards was strong. I was lucky to have my bandmate Kyle with me, and before I made any decision he said, “Come on—we’ll go for a swim first, and then we’ll write.” I’ll never forget that leap into the Atlantic—the cold sting of the Cork sea, the wild air on my skin, the feeling of being stripped back and renewed. It was a moment that felt like a quiet rebirth, a reminder that I could leave behind the parts of myself that no longer served me. When I brought this feeling back home, I sat with one of my closest musical companions, Conal Early, and together we shaped those emotions into the song you hear today. His presence, musicianship, and understanding helped turn that personal moment into something universal. Bantry is a song about realisation—that life moves fast, that change can be frightening and beautiful at the same time, and that stepping into your own path is its own kind of awakening. As I release my new album, My Heart’s Tonight in Ireland, this song feels like a reminder of where the real journey began: on the edge of the water in Bantry Bay, choosing to grow, to move forward, and to face those demons head on.
