Vivien Leigh - A Beautiful Nightmare - Biographical Documentary

Vivien Leigh is one of the most celebrated figures of classic cinema, a winner of two Academy Awards and an acclaimed stage actress. Her legendary beauty, glamorous lifestyle and celebrity marriage to Laurence Olivier seemed to be the stuff of dreams, but beneath the surface she fought a lifelong battle with severe mental illness. In this biographical documentary, Dr Graeme Yorston, explores the life and struggles of Vivien Leigh – star of the highest grossing movie of all time - a woman once considered too beautiful for her own good – from his perspective as a psychiatrist. To find out how a polite, well mannered, convent school educated English rose could turn into a vixen, screaming obscenities, biting, lashing out with kicks and punches and storming off into the night for casual encounters. Part One deals with her early years and in this second part her mental illness is discussed -described by her husband as “the ever-tightening spirals of an evil monster” Finding Out More: If you’re interested in reading more about Vivien Leigh’s extraordinary life there are lots of biographies ranging in tone from polite respectfulness to lurid sensationalism - I have added some of the better ones to my Amazon Store Page.
