Lecture: Sérgio B. Martins on Hélio Oiticica
In the first of a series of lectures presented 2/1/17 in association with the exhibition "Hélio Oiticica: To Organize Delirium," critic and art historian Sérgio B. Martins discusses Brazilian art from the 1940s-70s. For his lecture, titled “Each One Must be Vanguard: Hélio Oiticica’s Shifting Utopias”, he addresses the genesis of Oiticica’s avant-garde practice, especially his involvement in the Tropicália movement and his integration of rock music motifs into his formal and conceptual repertoire throughout the 1970s. Martins’ discussion covers several facets of Oiticica’s artistic practice as well as key elements within Brazilian artistic movements of the time.
